6sqft: A new Japanese market offering a taste of Tokyo opens in Greenpoint

A new Japanese marketplace connecting New Yorkers to the trendiest Tokyo brands opened in Brooklyn last week. Located on Norman Avenue in Greenpoint, 50 Norman is made up of three separate stores, Dashi Okume, Cibone, and House Brooklyn, all making their New York City debut. Japanese architect Jo Nagasaka designed the 3,500-square-foot space to capture the authentic essence of Japan in New York City, with the use of reclaimed wood from a demolished house in Kyoto.

Brownstoner: Japanese Marketplace Comes to Greenpoint

A venue celebrating Japanese food and culture and showcasing three Japanese brands as they debut in New York City is getting ready to open soon at 50 Norman Avenue in Greenpoint. The complex holds Cibone, a retail shop with artisanal goods from Japan that includes a small art gallery; Dashi Okume, a dried fish and dashi specialist from Tokyo; and House, a fine-dining Japanese-French restaurant. 【ニューヨーク時事】米ニューヨークで16日、日本料理に欠かせない「だし」を専門的に取り扱う店が開業した。日本産の天然魚介類などの乾物を用い、客の好みに応じ、だしパックを製造・販売する。和食が世界的な広がりを見せる中、だし文化の浸透を図るのが狙いで、こうした専門店は米国では初めてという。店を開いたのは、創業150年を超える東京・豊洲市場の水産仲卸業「尾粂商店」。「DASHI OKUME(ダシオクメ)」の看板を掲げた店舗では、店員がショーケース内のかつお節などの魚や昆布、キノコ類を基本として、客の相談に乗りながら組み合わせを助言。トマトなどの野菜も含めた素材は30種類に上り、配合を決めた後は店内の機械で粉砕や袋詰め作業を行う。

EATER: An Underground Cocktail Bar With a Light-Up Ceiling Opens in the Old Del Posto Space

The trio of restaurants and bars planned for the former Del Posto space will be completed this weekend, as Discolo opens its doors. Mel’s, the pizzeria came first, followed by Al Coro, the Italian fine dining spot helmed by chef Melissa Rodriguez. An underground cocktail bar with a light-up ceiling that’s synced to music apparently completes the scene. The low-slung industrial building at 50 Norman Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, formerly housed an auto repair shop. Now a Japanese company specializing in the umami-rich broth dashi, among other things, will open a store on the premises on Friday.
